Former Italian President back in court

Updated: Aug 23, 2020

Disgraced former Italian President, Marco Giovaneti, was in court again today to appeal against his electoral fraud conviction. Giovaneti, who was the subject of a secret investigation by the European Union law enforcement agency, Europol, during his first year in office, was found to have breached the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation more than 100 times.

Europol’s investigation into Giovaneti’s activities in the lead up to the 2026 Italian presidential election revealed that the politician purchased the personal data of more than 25 million voters from a complex network of black-market data brokers. That data was then used by Giovaneti’s campaign team to create sophisticated microtargeted campaign material that was distributed via Facebook and other social media platforms. Giovaneti’s landslide victory was largely attributed to his strong social media presence.

Claims by the RAND Corporation that black market data trading has become more profitable than the illegal drug trade have been proven correct, as sources within Europol say that Giovaneti paid over €50 million for the data.

Giovaneti claims he was not aware his campaign had purchased the data. The case is continuing.
